I've been tablet weaving for several years now. I find cotton pearl embroidery thread is lovely to work with, doesn't felt up if you have to back weave, is relatively inexpensive and has a look and feel of silk.
I've worked with linen sewing thread which produces a nice fine tablet woven band which is authentic to all periods and is very close in appearance to many viking finds. Modern knitting wool is just too thick. Or you could try fine tapestry wool. Silk is lovely to work with but VERY fine (unless you can find a weight suitable for knitting with) and expensive - also it takes ages to grow.
Great work for a beginner, the more you do the quicker it gets! Even the tiresome threading of the tablets.
